To calculate the ideal weight gain in pregnancy it is important to know the Body Mass Index, which will tell us if the woman is at her ideal weight, underweight or overweight. To calculate it, the woman's weight must be divided by the height in meters squared (56 / 1.60 x 1.60).
A result lower than 18.5 is considered underweight. If the figure is between 18.5 and 24.9 it is considered ideal weight. A BMI greater than 25 is considered overweight, greater than 30 is related to mild obesity and above 40 it would be morbid obesity.
To calculate the weight gain in pregnancy, it is therefore necessary to perform this calculation:
- If before pregnancy the BMI was less than 18.5, the normal weight gain during pregnancy would be between 12 and 18 kilos.
- If before pregnancy the weight was normal, it is considered that the increase in kilos should be between the 11 and 16 kilos.
- In case of having mild to morbid obesity before gestation, the weight gain should range between 7 and 11 kilos.
The weight that the pregnant woman gains throughout the pregnancy is distributed between the baby, the placenta, the uterus or the retention of fat and liquids in this way:
